The dream of Kerala to have Indian Institute of technology (IIT) campus in the state became a reality. With 117 students, the 18th Indian Institute of technology (IIT) has launched its first academic session in the temporary campus in Valayar and it is expected that they will shift to a 500-acre permanent campus in Puthussery district within three years, after completion of land acquisition process and construction of buildings.
At this initial stage, IIT-Palakkad offers four b-tech streams- Computer Science and Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering and mechanical Engineering. Surprisingly, only 6 students are from the state of Kerala itself and a majority are from Uttar Pradesh. According to the projection, Palakkad IIT campus will have 1000 students and 1000 strong faculty member in 10 years.
Addressing the students and parents through video conferencing, Human resource Development Minister, SmritiIraniencouraged the students and advised them to inculcate a social perspective and aim at developing a well-rounded life apart of focusing only on studies.
Admission test for these IIT were already conducted. For the very first time, Joint admission exam were conducted for 18IITs, 31 national Institutes of technology (NITs), Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad and other 18 government funded technical Institutions (GFTIs). JEE main Exam was held in the month of April and result was announced on 27th April. JEE Advanced was conducted on May 24. Lakhs of students appeared in the exam
