All You Need to Know About the New RRB JE Exam

The railway recruitment board has released a New Examination Process for the posts of Junior Engineer, JE (IT), DMS (Depot Material Superintendent) and chemical & metallurgical assistant (CMA).

The new method involves a four step recruitment process with two computer based tests. The entire recruitment process shall involve online application, 1st stage Computer Based Test (CBT), 2nd stage CBT, and Document Verification/ Medical Examination as applicable.

In this post, we take you through the recruitment process in detail;

THE OLD EXAM –The old exam was a one stage examination process involving a set of 150 questions. With technical subjects having 90 questions, the other 60 were distributed proportionately in general intelligence and reasoning, general awareness, and arithmetic. The total time given for the exam was 2 hours.


1ST STAGE COMPUTER BASED TEST- The first stage of the test is to screen the number of candidates. It will consist of questions within the standards of the qualifications for the posts. A total of 100 objective questions with multiple choice answers will be asked and the time given would be 90 minutes. The subject wise distribution of the questions for STAGE – I is-

Mathematics 30 30
General intelligence 25 25
General awareness 15 15
General science 30 30
Total 100 100


2ND STAGE COMPUTER BASED TEST – The shortlisted candidates from stage-I of the examination would take the second stage exam. The number of shortlisted candidates and the eligibility for being shortlisted is given below.

  • Short listing of Candidates for the 2nd Stage CBT exam shall be based on the normalized marks obtained by them in the 1st Stage CBT Exam.
  • Total number of candidates to be shortlisted for 2nd Stage shall be 15 times the community wise total vacancy of Posts notified against the RRB as per their merit in 1st Stage CBT.
  • This means the exam takers with the top marks; if they qualify to be in the specified number of candidates will be eligible for the second stage of exam.

The second stage exam would consist of 150 questions to be answered in 120 minutes. The subject wise distribution for STAGE II is as below-

general awareness 15 15
physics and chemistry 15 15
basics of computer and applications 10 10
basics of environment and pollution control 10 10
technical abilities 100 100
total 150 150


Here, Questions on the Technical abilities will be framed in the syllabus defined for various Exam Groups given at Annexure-VII-A, B, C, D, E, F & G. Click on the link to see the specific topics – technical ability for various exam groups

P.S. virtual calculator will be given in the second stage exam.

RRB JE 2019 – The Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) has released detailed notifications regarding the recruitment of junior engineer (JE) post. The board according to the current notification has invited applications for more than 14,000 vacancies in Junior Engineer (JE), Junior Engineer {Information Technology (IT) (DMS)}, and Chemical and Metallurgical Assistant (CMA) posts.

As per the notification RRB JE 2019

  • Opening of online registration – 02/01/2019 at 10am.
  • Closing of online registration – 31/01/2019 at midnight.
  • Closing of offline payment – 04/02/2019 at 1pm
  • Closing of online payment – 05/02/2019 at 5pm
  • Final online closing – 07/02/2019 at midnight
  • First computer based test – tentative date – April/May 2019
