# HOW TO ATTEMPT THE CAT EXAM?

Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation

Pay attention on the simple concepts merged with advanced mathematics:

CAT mostly has questions that are based on fundamentals and basics. One should understand these concepts well and not end up cramming questions. Try to attempt these simple questions in exam first as missing out on them is a bad choice.

• Accuracy of prime importance: CAT is a lot about accuracy. It is not as important to attempt a lot of questions as it is to get all or most of your answers right. The negative marking and the normalization process makes it important to be accurate when it comes to quant.
• Pacing yourself in the exam: One of the most commonly found mistake among candidates is that they tend to get stuck on one question either because they feel they can solve it or that after spending so much time, should complete it and move forward. But sometimes, this can lead to a lot of time wastage without any results.
• Grasp over calculation: Both the subsection requires a good hold at calculation. Speedy calculations not only help reduce time in quant section, they are the basic necessity in DI section. DI is mostly about fast and accurate calculations.
• General tips:

o   One must be thorough with tables, squares, cubes, square roots, percentage to fraction conversion and vice versa.

o   Common topics like tournaments, round robin shots, sales figure of a company, etc should be practiced.

o   Also, pay attention to the options given as many of them are to mislead the candidate. One must not fall prey to these tricks.

Read the complete passage: CAT exam has 3-4 passages each of length 600-800 words. However, there is no guarantee about the length and it can be changes according to the desire of the examiner. It is strongly suggested that the candidate reads the entire passage before getting to questions as many of such questions are inferential and reading only certain parts would not give the perfect meaning.

Make notes while practicing: This is a great way to master RC’s. Mental bookmarks can be made to locate appropriate information and help in better understanding. 3 things to keep in mind are: what is the subject, the main idea and the tone of the author of the passage.

Look out for structural words that convey important ideas or transition: Certain words play specific roles in asentence or paragraph. There are either continuity words, contrast words and conclusion words. Many examples of each

of these types can be searched for beforehand and then noted while reading the passage.

Do not over read: Over reading is when one keeps the details too much in mind but what is necessary is to keep the general outline of the passage at the back of mind. One does not have to memorize the passage only remember key words.

Logical Reasoning

Read the problem carefully: It is extremely important to read the entire problem carefully. Every fact stated is essential and are given to be used somewhere. Organise the information in a schematic manner in the form of tables, charts or symbols.

• Read all the logic puzzles, marking obvious associations or elimination on the graph. Continue going back over the clues, gaining additional information applying the same context established earlier.
• Do not get stuck on a puzzle and lose your valuable time. It is highly possible that one may be having a totally wrong approach. While practicing, attempt a variety of questions and not just similar types of questions. LR has 3-4 problems, each of a different kind.
