The UGC has decided to provide a grant of Rs. 312.20 crores to colleges and universities within the plan of the Development of Sports Infrastructure and Equipment in Universities and Colleges scheme during the XII Plan to develop the Sports facilities in the campuses. This scheme will improve the existing outdoor/indoor infrastructure and will set up new facilities so as the participation of students in sports can get increased.
Apart from granting a large sum to schools and colleges for the development of sports in the school and college level, the UGC has directed universities and colleges to recruit sport teachers as soon as possible. The government is also taking steps to improve sports in schools and colleges as it is revising the norms of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan to include Physical Training Instructor at upper primary level so that the student can start early in sports field.
Through the Rashtriya Madhyamik Shisha Abhiyan (RMSA), funds are allocated to the secondary schools to purchase sports materials to develop the infrastructure of sports. Those students that win sports medals/participants of national/international events will be able to get free education. The government is also planning to establish a hub of fineness for development of Sports in several universities across the nation.
