Although, 26,800 high school teachers working in 2,209 block grant high schools are still going to continue their agitation.

Over a month, the strike has been continued. The teachers from different organisations are saying that the teachers should be paid equal salary for equal work and are demanding their salaries on the basis of the grant-in-aid policy instead of the block grant mode.

The teachers in the government schools are though being paid salary as per the grant-in-aid policy but the teachers in the private institutions get their payment on the basis of the block grant mode.

Mahasangh Convenor Prakash Chandra Mohanty told reporters after a discussion with the state government that “The Mahasangh has decided to suspend the agitation for two months as the government has assured us to consider our one-point demand of providing salary on the basis of grant-in-aid and repeal block grant system.”

Delhi Government to cut School Syllabus by 25 Percent

Manish Sisodia

Manish Sisodia, Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, has announced on Teacher’s Day during a phone-in-program on “Education System in Delhi” with All India Radio that the Delhi government will reduce the syllabus by 25 percent for classes upto 8th standard. So here comes a big relief for the students of Delhi.

During the phone-in-program, Sisodia announced, “The future of children cannot be allowed to be burdened by their heavy school bags. Though this issue has been discussed in the country for several years, the Delhi government has decided to reduce it through cut in the syllabus”.

Delhi Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal and Deputy Chief Minister, Manish Sisodia met President Pranab Mukherjee on September 25th, and discussed the state government’s initiative to improve the standard of education in the city.

“The president was apprised in detail about the AAP government’s vision on education. Kejriwal and Sisodia shared a document on education with the president that contained the government’s 12-point agenda to improve education standards”, an official said.

The aim of this plan is to improve the quality of education and teacher student ratio in the classrooms, ensuring availability of toilets, drinking water and laboratories in schools.

The official said, “The president was informed about the government’s plan to open a world class skill centre in collaboration with the Singapore government. A Delhi Skill University would also be opened”.

Recently in a press conference, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that Delhi’s Education System will be the best in the country.

From October 2015, the decision aiming for 25 percent reduction in school syllabus would be effective. Manish Sisodia also said that the Delhi government is implementing the election promise it had made to the students and teachers. He said, “We have completed the preparation of 25 per cent reduction in the school syllabus upto class eight and the decision will be implemented by next month in all Delhi government schools. The Department of Education has been working on this plan and it has completed its consultations with educationists, experts, teachers and parents on this issue

The Minister added, stressing upon the need for all-round development, “Due to heavy workload of their school syllabus students are unable to get time for activities which are crucial for their all round development. It has been felt that certain outdated topics which have no present day relevance are being done away with, the outdated and obsolete syllabus will be replaced by skill development, theatre, art, music and sports in the curriculum for classes 9-12.”

This measure was inspired by the former President Late APJ Abdul Kalam. It was his idea of reducing the course burden, as per Sisodia’s statement.

West Bengal education in problem

West Bengal Education System in Trouble

Frequent campus violence, bulk copy, irregularities in the admission procedures, frequent student protests over trivial issues plaguing West Bengal educational institutions, which at one time produced some of the most well-known people, both leaders and scientists in India.

One of the prestigious state institutions, jadavpur University, remained the epicenter of a large-scale student campaign that resulted in an unprecedented step because the Vice-Chancellor asked the step-down by chief Minister Mamata Banerjee when she made an unannounced visit to the University.

The student movement, which had a wide character with many jadavpur University alumni around the world, expressing solidarity has its roots in the demand by students for independent probe into the alleged rape of a female student.

Subsequent “violent” police crackdown on the agitation of students gradually turned, resulting in the Vice-Chancellor of Abhijit Chakrabrti stepping down in the face of what he called “undemocratic” and “unconstitutional” stir triggered “politically affiliated students.

Sarcastically, Chakrabarti predecessor Souvik Bhattacharya put in his papers, citing personal reasons almost a month after he was locked up for more than 50 hours students, demanding the reinstatement of two students suspended on charges of crushing.

However, in the academic circles of the University of claim, an outstanding educator and publicist resigned due to the lack of cooperation in the section of teachers close to the ruling Trinamool Congress, which the accused as her previous Marxist predecessors, because of the politicization of the education system in the state.

As teachers and former Vice-chancellors accused of political interference, particularly of the ruling Trinamool, “anarchy”, they also claimed that students tended to agitate for “all and all”.

IITs & GIAN to get an education-cooperation agreement

Education finds a small but significant place in India and the United State’s joint statement. As previously reported, the second time HRD Ministry’s initiative to create a global initiative academic network (Gian) finds mention in the text. During the evening Narendra modi visit to the United States in September, Jan mentioned as an important step forward in cooperation in the field of education.

Another highlight is that the U.S. decision to expand knowledge partnership for the support of the Indian Institute of technology, Gandhinagar (IIT-GN). Joint Declaration of intent has already been signed between the HRD Ministry and USAID. The partnership will strengthen research and entrepreneurship opportunities.

Ministry officials said that the model of cooperation will be made between the U.S. and India. In the case of IIT-GN, India does not ask for financial assistance. But, as in the case of IIT-Kanpur, USAID will help to create a consortium that will attract the best minds from American universities to help IIT-GN, which was established in UPA rule.

In the case of GAIN, 1000 American scientists of both science and the Humanities will be coming to India to teach at Central state-funded institutions, like Central universities, IITs, IIMS and other. In the HRD Ministry makes the scheme attractive from the point of view of remuneration and facilities. Currently, the Ministry will spend just about Rs 8 crore per teacher for one semester. This includes compensation and cost of living

Data in form of not only text but, audio files, images and videos help students to understand the concepts much better. Even the parents get a chance to catch-up with the current technology.

Education Then and Now in India

Education is the key to success and a fat paycheck (most of the times it is!), though what comes in between is a prolonged struggle of incessant hours of mugging up several books accompanied by sleepless nights without any scope of living life to the fullest until one reaches the ultimate glory of success.

Sooner than a child reaches the age of 5, he is placed in a school with the mighty burden of 50 odd things like assignments, activities, projects and a few more stuff to come to a realization that the battle against time for success has already begun and this struggle shall persist for 20 more years of his/her life. It is amusing to see how a single human being operates on 40 plus students in a classroom and manages to survive by the end of the day. What’s more amusing is how a child accustoms himself to the environment of a classroom with minimal 6 hours of stringent sitting sessions and an absolute sense of isolation from legitimate sleeping. Though some doze off involuntarily only to be awakened by lashings from the teacher. While a few students put their heart and soul into the classroom teaching without whining, a considerable number of students cannot help but rant on about the autocratic school system. This is followed by thinking about how much relaxing it would be if there were anything like distance education… wait a minute, it is already out there! Imagine sitting on your bed, munching snacks without any fear of getting caught by any teacher while attending classes, however, the scenario of drowsing  learning before blackboard is replaced by the laptop/computer screen. Yes, this is the ultimate dream of every student who has been a victim of forced educational sessions conducted in a classroom without any access to food, friendly banter with fellow classmates and all possible connections to what is called ‘freedom of speech’ until class is over. 35 odd minutes of such education impositions might suck the creativity out from you unless you have a great teacher who makes classroom teaching helluva fun. (The odds to find such teachers are relatively far below than India’s Poverty line). Distance education is probably the epitome of ‘creative learning while sitting at home’ with certain terms and conditions intended. Before prodding upon the ‘Terms and Conditions’, it is necessary to trace the roots of this ‘heavenly’ concept of Distance learning. What Google says about Distance learning is a method of studying in which lectures are broadcast or conducted by correspondence, without the student needing to attend a school or college.’

However, students interpret the whole term as this: a method of studying in which lectures are conducted without the physical presence of a teacher which makes studying a little less painful and the unavoidable oddities of hunger and sleep while attending classes can be easily met.

Massive Online Open Courses have been trending in past few years where even the highest levels of degrees and doctoral programmes are involved. Many short term courses are even covered within 3 months of starting them. The history of Distance Education can be traced back to early 18th century in Europe where Issac Pitman came up with the ‘Shorthand System’ where Academic concepts and writings were mailed to students and feedback regarding that was also maintained. This system of learning went on to become a success and later in 1858, University of London became the first university to offer Distance learning Degrees. Radios in US were introduced as educational medium so as to broadcast educational sessions for schools and Universities.

However, it was internet which revolutionized the idea of Distance Education. With the onset of several online courses, more and more students have been applying for such online degrees and it serves the comfort to access education in possibly the most feasible way. Free Online Education has emerged as one of the promising ways to get education.

Several universities like Bharathiar University, Annamalai University and Anna University in India offer distance learning and provide academic degrees to students who prefer learning from home than taking regular classes.
