Manipur will get two more universities immediately and bills for establishing them will be placed in winter session of the Assembly starting from December 18. While communicating with press-reporters, Minister Okendro Moirangthem said that the cabinet had approved the bills for the two universities.
The Sangai National University, the first one will be located in Churachandpur district in private hands. The Dhanamanjuri University will be located in Imphal will be handled by the government.
The Ministry of Human Resource Development has previously allotted Rs 55 crore as the first instalment. Existing colleges in the area will be connected to this planned university.
About 8500 graduates are produced by Manipur every year. But, in-take capacity of post graduate students in the varsity is only 1240 students. Rest 120 students are adjusted with Indira Gandhi National Tribal University. Other students have to travel elsewhere in the country for further studies.
It is notable fact that the Union Government had already given its nod to set up the national sports university in Imphal for which Rs 100 crore has been allotted. Nevertheless, the government is not able to get land for the structure of the university campus.
